Peru Eizagirre is a Basque drummer and composer based in New York City. From bebop to hip hop, Peru’s musical identity is inspired by a fusion of genres in jazz and beyond. He is a recent graduate from the Manhattan School of Music where he obtained a Masters in Jazz Arts . He is also a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (BM HonsJazz, 2021). With various projects, Peru has performed across venues and festivals across the UK, Europe and the US, including Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club in NYC, Ronnie Scott’s London, the Jazz Institute Berlin, Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival, Glasgow Jazz Festival, and the Conservatorium Van Amsterdam, among others.
In New York, Peru has had the chance to learn from world class musicians such as Kendrick Scott, John Riley, Marcus Gilmore, Ingrid Jensen, Jaleel Shaw, Nicole Glover, John Benitez and Marc Cary. He has also had the opportunity to play in venues such as the Lincoln Center Dizzy’s Club, Penny Jo’s, Whitney Museum of American Art and National Arts Club. Aside from these performing opportunities, Peru had the chance to be part of an award winning ensemble: ‘VSOP’ ensemble, led by Jaleel Shaw. This ensemble won DownBeat’s 47th Annual Student Music Awards for “Best Soloists”.
Peru became a central figure in the vibrant Glasgow jazz scene during his undergraduate studies, where he learnt from renowned Tenor Sax player Tommy Smith and drummer Alyn Cosker. In Glasgow, Peru performed and recorded with various groups, such as award-winning collective ‘corto.alto’ (Best Band, Scottish Jazz Awards, 2020, Mercury Prize finalist 2024), ‘The Paracosmos’ and ‘Blue Boar Brass Band’. His debut EP Just a Moment features award-winning UK musicians including Fergus McCreadie (Mercury Prize nominee), Ewan Hastie (BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year 2022), Matt Carmichael (BBC Young Jazz Musician Finalist of the Year 2020) and Anoushka Nanguy (member of Kokoroko, Scottish Jazz Awards Rising Star, 2020). His music has been played on the BBC, Jazz FM and the Basque public broadcast radio, Euskadi Irratia.
